It’s a bit late for new years resolutions, but that’s me. I was once told I’d be late for my own funeral, and they were probably right, but anyway, here goes.

My own personal resolution is pretty general, it’s that I will succeed. There are a few things, big and small, that I want to succeed at this year and we’ll see how it pans out. This site, 43 things looks to be an invaluable source of support for every conceivable resolution you can think of. It allows you to make lists and puts you in touch with others trying to achieve the same aims, it gives ideas and is a kind of social networking hand holding across continents, brilliant idea!

I’ve been helped in the social networking side of resolutions by a couple of blogs which I’ve snitched bits out of and cobbled together my own set of rules/resolutions for the coming year.

I have trouble keeping away from my favourite social networking sites so this resolution from Mark ‘Rizzn’ Hopkins seems doable to me. He wants to sign ‘in’ to his networks more than twice a week to keep up to date with friends and colleagues, and I think I should maybe try to get mine down to twice or three times a week, I spend way too much time on facebook et al. One hurdle when not constantly signing in, as Mark has found, is the enormous amount of email which gets banked up, this would send me running for the hills, I hate banked up email. He also makes a good point about grammar, which, as a novice blogger, I would add to, with getting the formatting and spelling right, checking dates, making sure links work, and proof reading, as it all adds up to a much more elegant and readable blog.

digitalmediawire is especially good, as the resolutions can be used for personal as well as social networking. It’s always tempting not to answer the phone so having a resolution ‘not’ to answer random calls gives a feeling of accomplishment rather than guilt. Being a better friend, commenting and interacting more in their lives makes a lot of sense. Friends in real life as well as online should reflect quality rather than quantity.

It takes time to realise who is going to be a quality friend, or even if ‘I’m’ a quality friend, so if there’s no communication for a while, delete them, friendship is not a competition to see who can have the longest friendship list in history.

This last blog, Bloggingtips suggests planning, and keeping to schedules so that your blog looks lived in, even if it’s once a week, at least there’s some content going in there. I find this really easy at some times in the year, but at others, when I have courses going on, I find it really hard, but I love blogging, especially the social network side of it, so I really am going to try to keep up at least one social network blog each week. I could use this one or my own, but I’m going to try.

They say resolutions are meant for breaking, so we’ll see how I get on. I seem to have set myself quite a challenge for the coming year.

I will end by wishing all you bloggers out there a very happy, social networking new year.

ps. I have succeeded in my first resolution, which was to write and publish a post for Socialset of the net, yay!

..It says so on their ‘about’ page. But some people feel that’s not how it should be.

There’s been a small amount of hooha in the UK over the ‘fact’ that convicted child killer Ian Huntley has a Facebook profile.

Shadow Minister for Justice Edward Garnier led calls for Huntley’s page to be shut down.

He said: “This will disgust people. Facebook’s owners should act now.”

According to the news article, Huntley does not have access to the internet in prison so was directing instructions on how his page should be run to a female admirer ‘on the outside’. I say ‘was’ because ‘his’ profile has now disappeared. There has been speculation on various discussion boards that this is down to an alteration of the profiles privacy settings, but since the terms of service clearly state that you must not use the service or the site to:

register for more than one User account, register for a User account on behalf of an individual other than yourself, or register for a User account on behalf of any group or entity;

It was obvious that were the profile in question proved false then it would have been removed as soon as the issue came to light.
Sadly there are already a few groups on the site who don’t seem to fall under the same swift action of the terms of service - notably the ‘Get Huntley Off Facebook’ group who are at this count showing 24,263 members.

When creating a group on Facebook, you will find this message at the foot of the form:

Note: groups that attack a specific person or group of people (e.g. racial) will not be tolerated. Creating such a group will result in immediate termination of your Facebook account.

Yes, Huntley is a convicted killer but rules are rules, Andre Smith of London started the group and not only is his profile still intact, the group is flourishing with 136 discussion topics on the go - many showing a sense of black humour about the topic, yet some of the posts make for quite disturbing reading. What surprised me were the people who joined Facebook specifically to join this group (apologies for profanity, it was difficult to find an example without):

I have joined facebook today after reading in the newspaper about Huntley, the reason I joined was to get the sick bastard off here, is there no where safe from sickos like that bastard. It is wrong that this should be able to happen but then this is the web and it goes to show how false identities can be made and how sicko’s can crawl back into our lifes without being noticed.
Jaki Duncan

I understand that a child killer will always bring out strong emotion, but it’s a testament to how strong a medium social networking has become that it serves as a rallying point of protest - not only in this case but in the recent victory of the national union of students in their disagreement with the HSBC.

Now if only people would realise that a name is not a unique thing, there is always the possibility that there is more than one ‘Ian Huntley’ or ‘Ian Nixon’ in the world then those people posting suggestions for hate mail to be sent to these profiles would really stop and think for a moment about the possible misery they are inflicting upon an innocent person.

..And we should hope that anybody responsible for a social network will be keeping a weather eye out for such things alongside their search for content that infringes copyright.

This weeks round up of the social network vibe is two things.

Very late sorry but holidays and work happened. I will try not to allow that to happen again.

A great opportunity to point back to some of the posts from other Social Network contributors whom sit in my own Google reader stream

Contributors of intellect and cunning in this social network post include , in no particular order, Steve Spalding, Lorri Randle , Chris Brogan , Jeff Pulver , Maki and of course no Social Network round up is complete without a pointer to Jeremiah Owyang.

First advice from “How to split an Atom” is the use of those long used, oft disputed , rarely ratified Social News sites. In “How To Use Social News Sites” Steve breaks down the known and the new of the networking news. From the Golden Childs prodigy DIGG to the old vanguards of first posting Slashdot and onto such greats as Truemors, Reddit, Stumbledupon and others. Listing pros and cons to each site with a nice wrap up advising us all to watch where we post and how for the readers of such venues are often less than literate or capabable of handling a staunch debate. Wise words Steve.

After that reading session , sit back grab a cup of Chai, and enjoy the link from Lorri Randle to the Social Networking 101 with Christopher Penn. This video actually links over to Christopher Penns own site and you can expect quite a bit of great commentary, advice and oh yeah Chinos.

Now that your well educated on Social networks its time to dust off that Facebook profile , removing all those terrible drunken party pictures ( or not ) and take Chris Brogans advice on Fix your Facebook now. Did I take the Advice, well kinda but trust me I will , honestly I am going to update it real soon now just as soon as I get the next twitter out and update my Mash profile and fix my side bar on loudmouthman.com.

Paying attention to my Blog though and the blatant linkage into it is the Focus of DoshDosh.coms recent post on “Social Media Marketing Strategy #2: The Mullet and Link Baits” . Linkbaits and Mullets gives some great advice to those who just go for broke peppering their blogs and their content with the same same same same content in an attempt to grab attention of their readers. For those who feel traditional mechanisms can apply in a social network , read some of Dosh Dosh first.

Having a plan and strategy was the topic for Jeff Pulvers post “What is YOUR Social Media Strategy” describing Facebook as a tactic ( not the small minty variety ) in an corporates Social Media strategy and highlighting that its not just for kids anymore. Something I know in the UK we are still hammering away at.

Continuing in this Theme is “Web Strategy: What the Web Strategist should know about Twitter“ is another great review and break down of the corporate value of one of the social networks more popular brands. I especially loved the link to Brian Oberkirchs post “Dont Tweet like a n00b” .

But if all this talk, strategy, planning and fixing is just too much for you then I can highly recommend a return to Steve Spaldings “How to split an Atom” and his post “How to Create Anti Social Networks“. Now im not going to afford the main culprit of Steves post with yet another texual link to up their Google-arity but suffice to say the bacn went out and the SPAM descended for a few days there and I for one was glad to have been on Holiday.

Speaking of which theres no more planned for a few more months but if your finding these posts useful, informative, daft or interesting then let us know. If you dont like these posts then really , why are you still reading !

Thanks for reading.

Okay lets agree that first of all that MASH is still in BETA and that the conversations available from its Social Network is still in its infancy. Yahoos new social media networking site is however a little short on creating conversations. I was luck that fleaSHA was kind enough to send me an invite. Signing up though leads to the first “Huh?” moment when you are asked to claim the profile or make a new one. Its unclear what the differences are ( if any ) and I elected to create a new profile immediately loosing the connection to FleaSHA , sorry ! Traditional questions are all in there, whom you are , what your doing, what you look like , what interests you and a few basic toys. Clearly theres good integration to Flickr and the option to fine tune the output and the CSS is something , different. Other than that you have a vague feeling of a walled garden awaiting the arrival of landscape decorators. Of course I will stay signed up and send out any invite to those whom ask but so far I cant see what its offering beyond a simple wall to hang my content on, see for yourself and give me your thoughts.

My profile on mash if you can inspect it and add as a friend is as you can see fairly mundane. They have at least now included the BLOG Module. The Modules certainly add an aspect of FaceBookAppishness ( its a word ! ) to the site so we shall wait and see where they take them.

Now I said it at the start this is in Beta but the idea of social networks is a hardly breaking new ground by now and even Kevin Roses own Pownce managed to incorporate a few basic trends and features which people expected. Here I have to say the only thing I have found the same is the well trodden Status line ( called Blurt ) for which all I can say is been there, said that.

Heres looking forward to see what they offer in the coming weeks.

Is this ever going to be a reality, I hear you ask? Well, according to Website Magazine, it most certainly is, but is it a bit like buying friends? To try and answer that question, they have included a little survey, which asks the question ‘Do paid social networks equate to buying friends’? I took part and the results were a conclusive ‘maybe’. Fifty fifty result, although I was only the fourth to take part. Anyway this pay for friends site is called Yuwie and if it’s to be believed, it’s going to pay its members for messing about on the Internet. You get paid for adding friends, for uploading pics, for writing blog posts, in fact just for being there. How wonderful!!

I’ve signed up and await the money to come rolling in. I missed out on the millionaire status of Google adsense but I feel this is the way forward for me.

What do my ‘paid for friends’ get out of it? Well, they get to be friends with me of course, and they also get to start their own chain, it’s MLM all over again.

Anyway I’m zenfrog on there, so please contact me and I will happily add you to my friends list. I really am that friendly, honest!!

Part of the ‘debate’ raging around the social networks at the moment is the call for transparency from various ‘A’ listers and the need for privacy from pretty much everyone else.
Previously Robert Scoble was lambasted (not really a new sensation for the poor guy sadly) for holding the view that transparency, (in the sense of openness and accountability) was the only real way to be online, from a certain stand point it’s easy to see why he thought that but with the imminent arrival of his new son, he’s taken the floor to say so why his position has altered slightly.

‘Web 2.0′ is something on which everybody has something to say, on my personal blog I stated that it was a meaningless phrase to the average net user and that is a statement by which I still stand. However, the concept behind the phrase is something we can all understand; that people can now connect and contribute, that things are no longer static in this virtual world; you don’t have to just stare at the words and images on offer because even a first time visitor can leave their mark - without having the slightest knowledge of ‘geekstuff’.

There is a problem in that though, these newcomers have yet to grasp the dangers inherent in such a system, but it’s been picked up on by the mainstream press in an effort to educate these wide eyed wanderers.
a fairly recent example is this article in the Tribune and the quote at the very bottom says it all:

I just didn’t realize that anybody with an Internet connection could view it, even though part of me knew that was the whole point of the Internet. It really caught me off guard.

This guy is NOT a newcomer, he’s been blogging for three years and yet that was how he thought.
That’s how I once thought and how a lot of people still think. The internet is no longer the province of scholars and geeks, it’s not a ’sterile’ ’safe’ place, it’s a lot more like real life.

You cannot control who has access to your information online, you can limit to some extent who sees what but there will always be the possibility that those privacy measures will fail. This is why the ‘A’ listers are so fond of the idea of transparency; if you’ve nothing to hide then there can be no comeback.

With Facebooks change to their model for profile indexing, more people than ever will be search-able on the net, this is not necessarily a bad thing, Linkedin do the same and it seems head hunters love it, but those wishing to be head hunted are usually aware of the transparency issue and have culled their profiles and ‘whitterings’ accordingly.
The only problem with that is; once something has been uploaded, even if you delete it before it’s been cached, there is the possibility that somebody else copied it before you had chance to remove it.

Here’s just one example of how the things you write online can unexpectedly become available to the world at large:
You have the ability to password protect a post in wordpress, but this doesn’t automatically mean the post is only accessible by those with the password; if you have certain widgets enabled then they can cause the post to appear inaccessible on site but it is in fact visible to anyone who has subscribed to your RSS feed.
(I found that one out for myself after receiving a shocked email about the post in question )

Unfortunately it’s the ‘real life’ aspect of social networking that causes problems and makes transparency difficult to achieve.
In real life you can say things and do things with one set of friends that you’d never even consider doing with other people in your social circle - the thing many newcomers to the social networking scene fail to realise is that online, those boundaries no longer exist.

How do you find your way around the privacy issues? Are multiple profiles the only answer? Let us know what you think in the comments.

People have been saying that places like facebook and myspace are relatively untapped resources of marketing potential on the net, this could be so, but other people have been quietly working on plans of their own to harness the power of the social network.

Nielson, one of the largest market research companies on the planet, has built it’s own social network, it’s currently in beta and only accessible by Nielsen employees but there are apparently plans to open it up to the world at large by the end of September.
The Hey! Nielsen blog actually mentions a mashable article by Pete Cashmere about the site so of course I popped over to check it out, the part that caught my eye was this paragraph:

Why would any normal person sign up for a social network owned by a boring stat firm? Well, one area of the site appears to be the next evolution of the focus group: online panels will be formed and those who participate will get rewards. There’s no mention of money, but prizes will certainly be awarded. Meanwhile, those keen to follow the buzz around products, services and celebrities could stick around.

The reason it caught my eye? Well it all sounds very Ciao! They are a subsidiary of marketing company Greenfield online and so it appears that in this field, Nielsen has been slower to catch on.
In the spirit of full disclosure I should tell you that I have been a member of the site for quite some time, only they pay for member reviews and survey participation, so much so that I actually joined their affiliation program and got this nifty banner in order to recruit other folks:

I know, you didn’t come here to be recruited, you want the skinny on the social networks - but here’s the relevance: Ciao! has a thriving social community based around the thoughts and opinions of their members, admittedly it all happens within the comments; each review is almost like a blog post which the other members can comment on, but this can lead to quite heated debates - especially in the cafe portion of the site.

I admit, I’m interested to see how the Nielsen site stands up to Ciao! But I tend to agree with Pete, the only reason most people would stick around a site like that is financial incentive, no matter what ’social’ functions they provide these will always be secondary to the primary function of gathering information from its members - who wants to be constantly filling out forms in order to be sociable?
My reason for believing this comes from personal experience; I don’t participate in the Ciao! community, I only use the site to add/ read reviews of products in which I have an interest, my social networking happens elsewhere on the net.
Unless the Nielsen site has something quite spectacular going for it I can’t see them making any more headway than Ciao! on the social networking scene. Still, I’ve signed up for an invite and once I’ve had the opportunity to see if they can pull spectacular out of the bag or not, you guys will be the first to know.

I was quite surprised when I came across this comment by Rebecca Rachmany over on Guy Kawasaki’s blog:

Maybe professional networkers, idea-growers, and commentators can afford to spend this kind of time in Web 2.0 (blogging, social networking, RSS reading, delicious tagging, IMing, etc.) but for people who work in jobs where they are supposed to produce something other than ideas — it is just not possible to spend the kind of time needed to twitter, twattle, jangle, and jingle. Oh, right, and some of us have RL too.

As a marketing person, I have to know what all these things are, and I try many of them, mainly on my own time, I must add. I have doubts about the business productivity of people who are heavy users of these “tools”. What am I contributing to my company’s bottom line? What are we convincing ourselves is “work”? Even as the head marketing honcho/chica, how much am I really contributing to my company when I spend time on these “tools”.

It did make me stop and think though, most of my contacts on twitter and the like fall into the categories of ‘professional networkers, idea-growers, and commentators’ so just how productive is social networking for the truly dedicated employee?

My thinking is that it depends on the type of business, in marketing I would assume social networking is an invaluable tool as what sells better than ‘word of mouth’? But then I’m no businesswoman; I rely on common sense and intuition as opposed to the solid business credentials of my co-writers to steer me in the social networking sphere, but I feel that perhaps Ms Rachmany has not quite understood the possibilities inherent within the social networks.

For example the article ‘Social networking goes professional‘ from the online edition of the wall street journal shows how those in the medical profession are utilising networking services to help each other out, that in certain cases it is possible that patients may lose out without this tool at their disposal, but..

It also explains why certain businesses feel a little trepidation regarding the online networking scene:

For a variety of reasons, social networking has been slower to take off in the business world. Employees are wary of disclosing too much to potential competitors, and loose-lipped executives can easily embarrass themselves and their companies online. Policing these services’ memberships to weed out impostors can be difficult, and the sites are still in the early stages of turning their networks into sustainable businesses. Also, business users typically have less time to devote to socializing online and are willing to do so only if they believe they are getting a unique benefit from the site.

Which certainly bears out the comment Rebecca Rachmany left which prompted this post.
Now a tool such as Twitter may seem a little too frivolous for the dedicated businessman or woman on the go, but, as with any tool, it all depends on the use to which you put it.

Way back in March Mike Sansone wrote a short piece on how twitter could be used as a business app and Sean aka Geek with Laptop was definitely thinking along the same lines but on a broader scale in June. This month it’s been picked up by many a business site touting similar ideas and in particular Allen Stern over at Centernetworks wrote a particularly insightful article (and the comments are also well worth the read) but at the end gave 2 rather compelling examples of how twitter could be used as a viable business tool that goes a step further:

Here are two uses for Twitter (or another micromedia tool) that could be huge:

* Tech/business support - first we used message boards for help, then 1-1 instant messaging, now let’s use these friend-media tools for support as well. Say you are stuck with a PHP issue, post it on the micromedia tool and have your friends/followers provide assistance.
* Corporate marketing - imagine Pepsi, Walmart or the Gap providing specials, new merchandise announcements, etc. This could be very powerful for marketing. Imagine a Gap group where you could send a message each time you purchase a new item and send a code to a friend who could then scan their phone at the Gap to activate the discount. This has massive potential and I can only guess that the VC firms who funded Twitter last week are thinking the same thing. Rubel says micromedia could “reincarnate the 30 second spot” and he is right. I am guessing he is using/learning Twitter to help his clients at Edelman understand this medium to help sell it in.

I may not have the marketing or business acumen of a professional but I do see that it’s only common sense to view every new tool on the market as a business opportunity and then find the way to make it work for you.

What’s your take on this? Is twitter still a plaything or could it be that you too see it as a powerful tool in the right hands?

Thank you to Rosevibe for your comment, which I hope you don’t mind, I’ve quoted below.

It’s amazing how few politicians seem to realise the potential of the social networking phenomena though.

I read a blog post where someone was checking to see which American politicians were using Twitter - there were at least 3 presidential candidates making use of it with another 4 listed but not active.

I’ve struggled to find even that for the Brits..

This prompted me to go and have a quick check on our politicos and social networking.

I’ve come up with this link from the New Statesman which suggests there are a couple of politicians who are actually aware of facebook and myspace, but there’s no mention of twitter.

One of the two I’ve found so far are Stephen Williams, a Liberal, who refers to facebook only to say he’s joined it, and knows other ‘hon members’ who are also on the books. Williams only refers to it in relation to a party invite.

The other is Theresa May, a Conservative, who seems slightly more knowledgeable on the subject, and says the following:

“Members will undoubtedly argue that in modern times politicians must communicate more with their constituents, and I certainly agree, but modern times also offer modern means of communication, and those do not necessarily involve spending great sums of taxpayers’ money. Indeed, Members increasingly rely not on post and the press, but on websites, e-mail, blogs, text messages, and social networking services such as Facebook”.

Both of these references can be found in theyworkforyou, a searchable database of discussions, and questions and answers held in parliament.

I entered Myspace into the search, and it did marginally better on the amount of references, but not in relation to how it could be used politically. One mp, Justine Greening, a conservative, thought it was linked to teenage violence, but two others thought it was a good way of communicating, but only for disability support and allowing people to write potted histories of their lives. They don’t seem to have realised the potential of this tool.

To put another side to the picture, I found this link to a blog by Simon Collister, which is asking similar questions, and looks to be an interesting source of information.

Read and enjoy, this could be the beginning of the revolution of social networks and political activism.
