I take it all back, you guys were not a few hours cooled off from Gnomedex and the net went all a twiiter ( hah ) on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and other social media sites. Old friends fought and made up and strangers made new friends and businesses took another step into the deep waters of social networks. In 6 days of news on social networks I have got enough to write several pages of comments.
Dan Tyan , PCWorld, over at the MSN Tech blog discussed the mobility of micromedia and microblogs such as Twitter and Loopt. Specifically how Loopt is taking location based information based on GPS Data to actually localise your comments and match you with other potential local Loopt users. One cant help but feel that this particular tool would be a godsend to taxi firms and haulage companies whose drivers could check in and out of deliveries and collections and allow services like Loopt to do the heavy lifting of location translation.
Getting business acceptance of these social media tools at a corporate level is another matter. Elastictimes article on “Social Networks for the Capitalist” discusses some of these issues and goes on to round out the discussion of how social tools are invading the enterprise. As can be expected in this ongoing conversation of the market Jeremiah Yowang stops in with insights on how business needs to stop focussing on return on investment and look to use these tools as an efficient way to reach the customer, read more at Jeremiah s site. Oh and one more thing on that site is another great discussion on how Social Media impacts much more than Marketing. If this carries on we might just rename to Social Jeremiah on the net.
Whilst Robert Scoble is taking a break from blogging, the news about Facebook never stops. Dave Winer reported that the walls may be coming down in the Facebook walled garden. Currently Dave Winer is seeing Friends Status and Friends Update RSS feeds in the API for Facebook whilst some suggest these feeds are not new the prominence in the public mind is certainly higher than it was two weeks ago. Not before time though is an awareness of Applications in Facebook and the walled garden become so important as Micheal Arrington at Techcrunch discussed how Facebook is hitting back against black hat Application developers. A good job too since Duncan Riley, also of Techcrunch comments on the recent $3 million purchase of the facebook application “where have I been” by Tripadvisor. Possibly the best example of a smart purchase of a targetted marketing tool and how Social Media is being “understood” by business. This might be a great time for the chaps at TrustedPlaces to build the “Where I have eaten” Facebook application linked to their own site.
Since we are talking social media and business I leave you with this link to Small Biz Survival who have discovered some inspirational quotes from twitter. Which gives me a great opportunity to remind all you Twitter users to join us on The Twittervox show at Operator11 where we will be talking about Twitter conversations and the social set.
