Another Ounce of Pownce as the New York Times covers the Web2.0 golden boys latest Venture. It appears investors, and the press, feel Kevin Rose has the Midas touch when it comes to building and creating new ventures.
Pownce (a unfortunately chosen name for those in dear old Blighty) the currently ‘invite only’ social network, certainly created much buzz and interest for itself with invites to the network appearing for sale on Ebay. A few weeks on though and the bounce of pownce is no longer worth its ounce of effort. It’s going to have to do more to stand out in the online social network community.

Its possible that they could take a lesson from that maven of linkbaiting Jason Calacanis whose plaintive cries of “the sky is falling” sparked the thoughts we all secretly harbour, “He could be right”. Jason decided he had ‘had enough‘ of facebooks constant stream of people wanting to connect with him; be it by way of friendship, vampires, zombies or other applications. Frankly too much for the Overseer of Opinion as Robert Scobles reposte kicked off the usual back and forth blog tennis across the community. This isn’t a platform issue, it’s not even an interface issue it’s a “having to do everything again and again and again issue” as so succinctly placed by Jeramiah OwYang.

Possibly Jason could take a few lessons from the Child Exploitation and Online protection centre  who are looking into the “risks of social networks” , as reported by Crave. CEOPS “Think U Know” site harks back to those days of Stranger Danger and whilst we are all running around looking for monies and opportunities we cant forget how Social networks will provide new opportunities to the least desired of our communities.

If Facebook were to have any  worries about the possible success of their platform, and who in their right blog would doubt it ? , they might take a look at 5 Reasons Social Networks fail.  Tristan Louis hits on a few more salient points to issues concerning social networks, certainly as much as Chris Pirillo managed. However you can ignore the rather obvious ” we are; your not!” reference to another Social Network.

A Small World,  which is an very “exclusive” social networking site which this site has yet to get a sneak peak into since we dont know enough “trusted members”.

so much for social networking eh !
